Tell-Tale Signs You May Need a Root Canal

A root canal is the name of the dental procedure that will remove any decay that has formed in your tooth’s root and pulp.

On the outside of your teeth, there is a layer of enamel, followed by a second layer, which is dentin. Inside the tooth is the softcore that extends into the root of the tooth and your jawbone. The core is where the dental pulp is found, which is made up of connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves.

If decay makes it into the soft core of your tooth, the pulp can become infected or inflamed – it may even be necrotic (dead). When this happens, a root canal is necessary.

Keep reading to learn the signs you need a root canal.

Ongoing Pain

Persistent pain in your tooth is a telltale sign you need a root canal. The pain in your tooth may be consistent, or it could fade at times.

You could feel the pain deep in the bone of your tooth, or you may feel pain in your jaw, face, or some of your other teeth. There are other causes of tooth pain, too, so it is a good idea to go to a dentist to find the underlying issue.

Regardless of the cause, it is smart to call a dentist for any cases of pain. This is especially true if the pain is persistent.

Heat or Cold Sensitivities

Does your tooth hurt when you eat warmer food or when you drink coffee? Or do you feel pangs and sensitivity when drinking a cold glass of water or eating ice cream?

The sensitivity may be a sharp pain or a dull ache. You may require a root canal if the pain lingers for an extended amount of time, even if you stop drinking or eating. If your teeth hurt after drinking or eating something cold or hot, it is an indication the nerves or blood vessels inside your tooth have become damaged or infected.

Tooth Discoloration

If the pulp in your tooth is infected, it can cause the tooth to discolor. Breakdown of the internal tissues or trauma to your tooth can cause serious damage to the roots and give the tooth a grayish-black look. The pulp in your tooth may die if there is an inadequate blood supply, which signals the need for a root canal.

While tooth discoloration can have another cause, it is smart to see your dentist if you notice that your tooth has changed colors.

Do Not Wait to Go to the Dentist

If you are dealing with a tooth or oral health issue, it is a good idea to get to the dentist right away. As time passes, the condition will get worse and cause more problems and pain. By seeking care and treatment right away, you can avoid more serious issues and more pain and discomfort. Just find the right dentist to ensure you get the treatment you need.
