The third molars are commonly known as wisdom teeth. These are the final teeth to erupt and usually appear between the ages of 17 and 21. Not everyone is born with all of their wisdom teeth, or any at all. There are times when wisdom teeth may need to be extracted.
An extraction of one or all of your wisdom teeth may be recommended if:
- There is severe pain in the area
- There is swelling in the area
- The teeth are impacted, which means they do not have space to properly erupt
- There is incorrect angulation
- There is tooth decay
- Infections are recurring
- There is gum disease
